Chance The Rapper released his Coloring Book last month. It is very popular in my music rotation. There are certain albums that I particularly enjoy while I am creating. These albums are brimming with inspiring sonic vibrance and brilliance. My fierce and passionate love of music (and its many genres) fuels my creative endeavors. Coloring Book is an amazing piece of work that I wanted to visualize and write about. This isn’t a comprehensive review or a Genius lyric breakdown. Just some visuals inspired by each track and some things I thought about while listening.
All We Got
What is your passion? If you don’t know what is, please find it. If you know what your passion is, invest in it and protect it. The potential and the power resides within you to make great things happen that have never happened before your arrival on this Earth. Despite the promised storms of life, your dedication to your passion will sustain and push you through. Purpose and passion is what remains when everything else falls away. What would you do every day whether you are getting paid for it or not?
People and circumstances may try to rob you of your peace of mind. They may not want to see your vision come to fruition. Outside forces want to dictate to you how you live and what you do. Protecting your passion means fending off things may seek to interfere with your journey to actualization. When in pursuit of a dream, you need to surround yourself with people who support you and are willing to fight for/with you. Being around like-minded individuals makes any venture more worthwhile. You are who you hang around and your team can either prop you up or drag you down. Be not weary in well-doing and fight fiercely for your passion. Be a force to be reckon with.
This track speaks on the violence in Chicago and the increasing murder rates during the summer months. He speaks about losing friends and the hope of things getting better. Losing people is always hard. Loss has the ability to completely destroy you from the inside, if you allow it. We are not islands. We are human beings with connections that are very important to us. Tomorrow is not promised and every moment with friends and family must be cherished.
D.R.A.M. Sings Special
The world needs what only you have to give it. No one can do what you do the way you do it. Knowing your value will help you provide value to others.
“We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.”
– ‘A Return To Love’ (1992) by Marianne Williamson
Don’t get caught up in the distractions in the world. Never lose sight of your north star – your purpose, your dream. Good things come to those who consistently strive. Put in the focused work and stay ready for that moment opportunity knocks. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t happen when you think it should. Believe in your path and care about what you deposit into the world. The positivity you deposit will come back to you in a wonderful form. Trust.
Growth will happen. You can’t stay a child forever. However, never “forget how to fly”. All adults should strive to hold on to the imagination of their childhood. As an adult, you have more power than ever to make the vision in your head real. We all have a great capacity for creativity. Some choose to tap into that more than others. The responsibilities of adulthood and your childlike imagination are not diametrically opposed. One shouldn’t be thrown away for the other.
Reminded me about the post I wrote about a concept I called “Mixtape Mentality”. With self-initiated projects, there is no boss other than yourself. They are initiated because there is something you want to put out into the world. These passion projects aren’t assignments from someone else. This Coloring Book is music for the love of music and not profit. There is no need to wait for permission to create. Create often. Create now.
Majestic. Angels surround to protect. Angels also represent those who are gone from this world (some too soon). Never in the history of world have we had a better opportunity to make our own lane. We must take full advantage of all the tools at our disposal to reach our highest potential. There has never been more platforms to express who you are. Walk confidently in your truth, having the faith within and support abound.
Take a trip down memory lane – young relationships, first slow dances, and coming-of-age.
It’s a party. When you’re trying to have fun and let loose a little bit, sometimes people try to bother you and you have to shut all that out. You work hard to achieve a level of success where you can celebrate and relax a bit. Help people but, overall, keep your circle tight with people who will be there for you during ups and downs. The best teammates are the ones who are there for you with no ulterior movies. Your joy is not here for anyone’s thievery.
Don’t change or alter who you are for the world. Speak of excellent things and maintain your faith. Faith the size of a mustard seed can produce greatness in your life. Chance, a man of faith, is exalting and glorifying God through much of this body of work.
Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
Periods of rest are necessary for a healthy life. Even when carrying out righteous ventures, take time out to relax and spend time enjoying time with loved ones. Don’t lose yourself in the hectic machine that can be responsible adult life.
Finish Line / Drown
“His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” – Matthew 25:23 KJV
This track speaks to the joy of fulfilling your purpose. At the end of your life, you want to feel as though your life has been worthwhile for others and as well as yourself. It is the ultimate success.
“Drown” reminds me of baptism and giving my life over to Christ. You are never too deep in whatever or wherever to be saved. Transitioning from despair to joy in a wonderful feeling. Dive into a new and more fruitful life of blessings.
Are you ready?
Never doubt that you have purpose. Never doubt that faith and good works together will bring blessings down. Persevere, strive, and thrive regardless of current circumstances. Believe and prepare for what awaits you.
Thanks for reading, looking, and hopefully listening. I hope to do more of these musically influenced blog posts in the future.
